The Northern Centre for Advanced Technology (NORCAT) is suing Cambrian College for negligence and breach of contract. The College denies the allegations.
NORCAT claims $100,000 in damages, plus the costs of proceedings, GST, pre and post judgment interest, as well as any further relief deemed just by the courts, for what it claims was a failure by Cambrian College as a landlord.

Some students might have heard stories from their parents and grandparents about how much you could buy with a nickel back in the day.
Imagine how they might feel if they knew that parking at Cambrian was going up by as much as $100.
The higher cost of parking could cause difficulties for many students next year. This raises the question as to whether or not it is even worth it to pay for a parking pass or to just hop on the bus.

Imagine you’d decided to study abroad and after choosing your program and college, finding a place to live in a strange country and buying a plane ticket, the college announced a $500 increase in your tuition.
For international students coming to Cambrian next fall, this is exactly what they will be experiencing as their tuition will increase from $8,500 to $9,000.

This September, first-year students will go through a mandatory weeklong orientation, which Cambrian College says will better prepare them for life on campus.
France Quirion, associate vice-president of Student Services, said the idea for the weeklong orientation began in December after she received positive and negative feedback about the orientation last fall. Quirion wouldn’t comment on the specifics of the feedback.

It's that time of year again.
Most Cambrian College students are finishing up their classes, studying for exams and getting ready for the summer.
That's also the case for the Journalism students who produce the Shield website and our magazine, which you can find on campus.
We hope you enjoyed what you've read over the past eight months. We certainly enjoyed doing it for you. And we look forward to doing it all over again next semester.
So, make sure to check back with the Shield in September for all that's new at Cambrian College. |

You’re walking into the main entrance of Cambrian, past the Tim Hortons, heading towards the Registrar’s Office, and you take a quick glance to your left. You’ll see a set of stairs leading down into what students and teachers alike call “the Pit.”

Cambrian College will lay off 14 employees in the coming months, including maintenance staff as well as employees of the Play ‘n’ Learn daycare centre.
Play ‘n’ Learn will be closing June 30, after the College announced yesterday that Cambrian is operating at a deficit of $7.5 million. The 51-space centre was useful for young parents attending Cambrian, as 40 students have their children enrolled in the daycare.
The College estimates that it will be saving $1.2 million with these cuts.
“We have to operate in a more sustainable manner,” says Sylvia Barnard, president of Cambrian College.

Crazy costumes, shouting at a screen and time warp dance lessons. What better way to relax and have fun before exam week by going to an on-campus screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show on April 15.

“The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a movie from the 70s, a musical movie of sorts,” said Megan Demlow, Travel and Tourism student and chairperson for the student council for the schools of Music, Art and Design, Communications and Hospitality and Tourism.
“It is known for costumes, audience participation including props and lines that are shouted at the screen and midnight showings all over the world for the past 35 years.”
